Bernadette's name came from the story of the miracle at Lourdes. Her
father, James Adelbert Jarboe, had a broken ankle as a boy that wouldn't heal properly
until someone in the family sent him some Lourdes water. He still had a slight limp
as an adult but he credited his healing to the water from Lourdes and named his first
child after this story.
Charlie Kelly was a World War I veteran who served in France and Germany
during the war. Julius Buckman also served at the same time and lost part of his leg
in the battle. They were friends who got married in a double wedding.
An article in the Monroe City News in the 1970's by Nellie Ann Lanham gave
this account of Charlie Kelly's service:
Charles Kelly possibly served overseas as long as any other local man
during World War I, spending 22 months in battle and with the Army of Occupation. He
was with the 89th Division, 354th Infantry, and after being engaged in four major battles
he was sent to Trier, Germany, for the occupation.
During a battle the sling on Kelly's rifle was shot away and another
bullet flew between his legs. "After that," he chuckled, "I outran
the bullets."
Among his duties while in Germany was guarding General John J.
Pershing, commander of the American Forces in Europe.
Bernadette owned and operated the K-Lee Shop for ladies clothes in Monroe
City, Missouri, for many years. She was a vivacious, earthy and altogether fun woman to be
around.
October, 1959: Charles Kelly was elected vice president of the 354th
Infantry Division at a reunion held at Mark Twain State Park at Florida at which 100 were
in attendance.
